We are an American family with strong Irish roots, breeding German Riding pones! Connaught Green Farms has operations split between two farm locations. Born of a vision to breed  physically talented ponies with the temperament suitable for a child’s mount or a passionate Adult Amateur, CGF is comprised of Jan and Brian Connolly, and their daughters Miare and  Megan. The vision for CGF began in 1999 with the goal of breeding the pony mare MKK Worth the Wait (aka Tessa) to produce pony foals  with the quality of movement for FEI dressage work.

While life and other complications slowed progress, in 2013 Tessa welcomed her daughter CGF Ruella (by Ridley).  With the addition of other mares in between, Connaught Green Farms continues to breed pones to meet our original goals…. All while working together as a family. We invite you to follow our blog as we share the milestones of our journey.

BRIAN & JAN

Growing up with horses in the small rural town of Cottage Grove, MN, Jan’s passion for horses never diminished. A few years after marriage and starting their family, Jan and Brian made the decision to move to the country and raise their children with the values of hard work and responsibility.  Teaching her daughters to ride on the Arabians and POA mares they acquired, Jan gave the girls the first taste of what has turned into a lifelong passion.  Although she no longer rides, Jan enjoys doting on all her mares and providing the best care possible.

Raised in the suburbs, Brian didn't have direct exposure to horses until he started dating Jan. After moving out to their dream farm, Brian got a horse of his own. An Arabian mare named Fairah introduced him to riding, particularly on the trails in the nearby State Forest. Chief fence fixer, stall builder and critical show support team member, Brian’s love of horses has only grown through the years. When CGF Ruella was born, his heart was immediately taken by the young filly. He continues to dote on her, and helps raise the youngsters with lots of care and attention.

MIARE

(Pronounced My-Ree): Growing up in the midst of Western-country, Miare always found herself interested something different. The fox hunting art of old England held attraction for her, and it was Miare who first started riding in an English saddle.  Her POA mare Sadie taught her to jump and fueled an interest in the English disciplines. In high school, Miare began working as a professional groom for a local Arabian halter show barn. Little did she know that the experience she gained handling horses of all ages and training levels would continue to be applied to this day. Dressage lessons began in high school and  from then on she was hooked. From Dressage schooling shows to local open shows, clinics and lessons, Miare’s equine education has continued to grow. She began breeding in 2000 which produced her gelding Toby, whom she has brought along with the help of various professionals.  She continues to develop her skills as a rider, trainer and breeder through clinics, books and mentorships.  Miare particularly enjoys working with the young horses and beginning their foundation of education.

MEGAN

In her freshman year of High School, Megan began riding English and showed 4-H. She quickly joined her sister at the Arabian show barn and gained skills for the management and grooming of show horses. Soon after, Dressage lessons began, taking her riding in a new direction. After college, she began a career that would lead her to a marketing role for the Nutrena brand of horse feeds. That role provided exposure to various disciplines at all levels including the 2010 World Equestrian Games and supporting Team USA riders for the 2012 London games. Armed with the knowledge of how champions are nourished, Megan leads the nutritional program for CGF. She has shown in local open and schooling shows and has ridden for a number of clinicians. Megan keeps herself up to date on the latest in breeding and sport through clinics, lessons, books and mentorships.  She began breeding in 2002 when she  produced her first gelding, CG Amore. Megan is often the ‘organizer’ for CGF efforts and you’ll find her actively researching bloodlines and learning new and different perspectives on the horse industry.  In 2022, she aims to return to the showring with CGF Ruella. Stay tuned for more on their journey!
